Now named The Doors 21st century, D21C was able to rally the Holmdel, New Jersey, audience up onto their feet in spite of the fact that the band's audio engineer failed to rectify an utterly disappointing sound on Friday, June 24, 2005. Glancing around the PNC Bank Arts Center pavilion, more fans were out on the lawn than inside the venue.
Keyboardist Ray Manzarek and guitarist Robby Krieger are keeping The Doors open for business, joined by vocalist Ian Astbury, bassist Phil Chen, and drummer Ty Dennis. D21C played to a mixed crowd, spanning a cross-section of eager teen-aged fans and graying baby-boomers.
D21C returned to perform a single encore, supported by Carmine Appice on drums and Pat Travers on electric guitar for a rousing version of "Roadhouse Blues". The fierce band jam was punched up with Appice behind the skins. Travers and Krieger tore into dueling lead solos as a blonde and a brunette appeared on stage to dance to the music.
D21C headlined the Strange Days Festival tour with a brief appearance on stage along with performances by Pat Travers, The Yardbirds, Vanilla Fudge, and Steppenwolf at the outdoor facilty. The enthusiastic audience enjoyed the engaging mix of bands on the bill.
Holmdel setlist: Break On Through * Love Me Two Times * When The Music's Over * Five To One * Touch Me * L.A. Woman * Encore: Roadhouse Blues (with Carmine Appice & Pat Travers)
