A
Trio of Triple Aliases
Guest, McKean & Shearer celebrate 25 years
with acoustic humor
by Mitt Namlitt
Sans any facial dressing, metal costumes or stage distractions, Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer exceeded their entertainment value at the Borgata Music Box in Atlantic City on Sunday, May 24, 2009. The talented trio sang a decent helping from their back catalogue of humorous hits from both Spinal Tap and The Folksmen.
To share celebrating the monumental 25th Anniversary of the cinematic success of THIS IS SPINAL TAP, the road-tested musicians decided to head out on tour and re-experience the music with their fans by choreographing an acoustic jam with exciting new rearrangements of their well-loved original comical compositions lampooning both the rock'n roll and folk music genres.
An enthusiastic audience eagerly greeted the mock rockers on Labor Day weekend. CJ Vanston provided occasional keyboards during their engaging set, which incorporated vintage videos, an NBC memorandum moment, an impromptu quiz show, and comedic chatter amongst the trio. You can believe this gig cranked weigh past Eleven!
The Music Box is an incredibly intimate oasis enhancing the ambiance of a live concert. This was the perfect venue to unwind to their Unwigged & Unplugged repertoire. Guest, McKean & Shearer displayed a seasoned musicianship. McKean's beautiful wife Annette O'Toole joined the trio on stage for a few cameo duet vocals on selected songs.
During the spontaneous Questions & Answers portion of the performance, RockonTour was handed the wandering microphone to ask the trio whether or not any consideration has been given to compiling a Spinal Tap Anthology. Spinal Tap has 30 years of taped appearances on television and in concert.
The stellar singers were kinda caught off guard by the query in that they had not thought about the concept of packaging the band's live appearances and may not have realized the potential audience that would be thrilled to own archived stage jams. From Saturday Night Live to Carnegie Hall to Live Earth, Spinal Tap has a wealth of material to present their fans on DVD.
A new album, BACK FROM THE DEAD, is scheduled to be released in June 2009. The double disc features music and a companion DVD. The lads are even offering a free download of SAUCY JACK online. Spinal Tap has long since retired the notion that they are a fictitious rock band. Spinal Tap deserves to be inducted into the American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
